Black Bird
Main Title for Apple TV+
Put a hometown hero and a serial killer in the same room and you’ll have a recipe for redemption. Bringing a fascinating perspective to life behind bars, James Keene’s 2010 novel, In With The Devil, is a true story about the intimate relationship between him and Larry Hall, a serial killer he’s coaxing into confession. For Apple TV’s Black Bird, we married digital and analog in an ominous visual montage that unpacks toxic masculinity and critiques how, as stated by showrunner Dennis Lahane, “American myths are destroying the country”.
what we did
Capturing the culture of the late 70s through 90s, we were challenged to recreate an era in an authentic way that resonated with the audience. We contrasted imagery of High School VHS tapes with perfume ads portraying what men saw as the ideal woman. From crowded city streets and office cubicles to white-collar culture, we see how it fuels the destructive realities of predators. We invite and encourage a discussion larger than the characters themselves —the ongoing perpetuation of young girls and women being taken under the wrong wings and facing the life-threatening atrocities of predators.
